The Great British Campout is the brainchild of VW enthusiast, Ian Alcorn, a bathroom fitter from West Bridgford in Nottingham. Ian initially came up with the idea so his children would have something exciting to do at the weekend (way back in the first lockdown period).
The plan was simple: invite fellow VW and camping friends to spend a night in their Campervans whilst parked on the driveway, or in a tent pitched in the garden, with a suggested ‘Just Giving’ donation in support of NHS staff and volunteers caring for Covid-19 patients (run by NHS Charities Together).
A Facebook group was created on March 30th ’20 and, with the event due to take place on Saturday, April 4 ’20, the fundraising target was set at £100. Clearly, Ian’s idea struck a chord as it wasn’t long before multiple online, radio and TV outlets picked up the story and, at the time of writing, Ian’s Just Giving page has received over 13,000 donations totalling an amazing £179,486.
Therefore, given the success of the first event, Ian and the Campout crew are celebrating the anniversary with a follow-up Campout, which is due to take place on Saturday 27th March ’21.
There’s loads of info on the Facebook page but, for the benefit of those that missed the first Campout, the principle is simple.. it’s all about camping out on the driveway in your trusty Camper or even in your garden in a tent/awning etc and raising money for a great cause (with a voluntary donation being your ‘site fee’!). Get involved with the online activities, too – junior bake-off at lunchtime followed by a Family Fortunes quiz and live music in the evening – and don’t forget to post a picture of your home-camp, too! Also, the good guys at VDub Radio have been working hard to raise money and will be providing music, entertainment and coverage of the event – it’s gonna be a blast!
