Beach Buggin’ 2017

Event reports

Organised by the very enthusiastic David Western, Allyson O’Connor and team, Beach Buggin’ enjoyed virtually wall-to-wall sunshine all day, which enticed the usual attendance of over 1,000 vehicles, that ensured Southsea Common really rocked!

Volkswagens started to arrive from 08.30am, their owners keen to derive as much entertainment that the day would bring. Beach Buggin’ enjoys its own unique atmosphere, with acres of flat greensward to park on, literally just across the road from the beach, with a kind of holiday vibe.

The Show ‘n’ Shine attracted the usual eclectic mixture of Beetles, Type 2s, Type 25s, Karmann Ghias, etc, while 22 pre-booked clubs mustered a large number of vehicles and a great many water-cooled VWs were also attending. There was more than enough variety to satisfy everybody, whatever their particular penchant. Beach Buggies are also an important focal point at this event and they were all parked in their own designated area, making it one of the biggest gatherings of the year.

Nowadays proceeds from Beach Buggin’ go to a number of different local charities, but the main recipient for 2017 was Guide Dogs For The Blind. The aim was to raise enough money to train a dog, including all the necessary equipment and support, which was easily achieved! Other attractions at the show, included 56 trade stalls and autojumble, a DJ playing music all day and entertainment from a dance troupe, performing hip hop, street and break dancing.

A short walk away was a funfair, amusements and Southsea Castle, while a 10 minute drive will get you to the Spinnaker Tower (highly recommended for stunning views of Portsmouth, Isle of Wight and beyond) the Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays, where you can shop ‘til you drop! Alternatively in just 10 minutes, the hovercraft passenger service, will transport you to Ryde on the Isle of Wight, which is where your humble scribe nipped over for lunch, as part of a special all in deal with Ryde Castle and Hovertravel!

Best of Show and Best T5 went to John Paul Lockyer, Best Beetle Award went to Christian Mitchell, Best Split to Gary and Sally Collins, Best Bay Nick Hayman, Best Type 25 to Gaz Roberts and the Best Beach Buggy award went to Snowy.

Whatever your expectations are from Beach Buggin’ it remains one of the most popular shows on the VW calendar. A place to become thoroughly imbued in Wolfsburg’s finest, to chill, relax and picnic with family and friends in a great location. We love it! The provisional date for 2018 is Sunday 19th August.
